OSI Reference Model Layer Summary.

          To assist you in quickly comparing the layers of the OSI Reference Model, and understanding where they are different and how they relate to each other, I have created the summary chart shown in Table 18. It shows each layer's name and number, describes its key responsibilities, talks about what type of data is generally handled at each layer, and also what the scope of each layer is in approximate terms. I also show some of the more common protocols that are associated with each layer.

I will say here that “standard disclaimers apply”. I don't want to repeat all of the caveats I mentioned elsewhere in discussions of the OSI model, but know that they apply here as well. Namely: the layers aren't always hard-fast, I haven't listed every single protocol here, some may really fit into more than one layer, and so on. In particular, note that many of the technologies listed as being in the data link layer are there because that is the layer where their primary functionality resides. In reality, most of these technologies include components in other layers, especially the physical layer.



Wireless Network Watcher.


Wireless Network Watcher is a lightweight Windows application designed to display all connected computers to your wireless network, along with detailed information about each of them.

Although it may sound a bit like a task addressed to more experienced users, Wireless Network Watcher makes everything pretty easy to use, mostly thanks to the interface.

In fact, that's also the sole purpose of the application: show this kind of information and nothing more.

The main window is the one that makes it possible, as it shows the IP address, device name, MAC address, network adapter company, device information, user text, first detected on time and detection count.

Furthermore, you can configure the format of the displayed MAC address, perform background scanning, place an icon in the Windows System Tray for instant access and beep as soon as a new computer is detected.

What's more, Wireless Network Watcher gives users the option to select the network adapter they wish to use, just in case there are multiple such hardware devices on your computer, but also the IP address range to be scanned.

Last but not least, the application has been developed to allow you to export the list of connected devices to multiple formats, including HTML, XML, CSV or text file.

Wireless Network Watcher doesn't stress up the CPU and RAM and works smoothly on all Windows versions, without slowing down the computer in any way.

All in all, this lightweight freebie does its job pretty fast and although it's supposed to run all the time and keep you up to date with the new computers in your network, it always remains friendly with hardware resources.

In the United States, corporations plan to outsource many thousands of Information Technology (IT) jobs to outside firms. Most of these jobs will belong to so-called offshore organizations in India or Southeast Asia. However, the more stress and worry a person takes on, paradoxically the more difficult it becomes to successfully reach their career goals.

    Don't Wait for The Upturn - So-called experts predicted a sharp upturn in the U.S. economy and increase in IT jobs for several years, that largely did not happen. Expect that IT will operate in the current climate with respect to outsourcing for the foreseeable future.

    Become a Generalist - Years ago in Information Technology, specialization was king. Those with the heaviest technical backgrounds and loftiest job titles, like Enterprise Architects, commanded the highest salaries. Nowadays, a person is much better positioned if they are skilled in multiple areas of both technology and the business side of IT. Flexibility is king.

    Look to Smaller Organizations - Fortune 500 companies will primarily pursue offshoring ventures but smaller firms less so. Outsourcing creates a substantial amount of overhead before the gains kick in, and small companies can't afford to pay that price for the foreseeable future.

    Start Your Own Business - Uncertain economic times, and occasions of industry change, are often the best ones for starting a new business, due to lower prices for capital, less competition, and the natural emergence of big new market opportunities. All it takes is an entrepenurial attitude and a few good ideas.

Above all, whatever your chosen career path, strive to find happiness in your work. Don't fear the ongoing change in Information Technology just because others are afraid. Control your own destiny.
